An open, ongoing class for beginning and intermediate reed makers. Bring your own tools and supplies or borrow them from me at the class. I give demonstrations as needed or requested. Students spend the class time working on their own reeds with guidance from me. Class size is limited to five students. Contact me for more information or to register.Time: 9:30 - 10:30 AM
Date: most Sundays
Location: Los Alamitos, California (directions will be given when you register by email)
Cost: $10 per student at each class attended, plus the cost of supplies if wanted
Borrowing Tools and Supplies
I have some extra tools that students can borrow at reedmaking classes and lessons for no extra fee. This is a great way to try out reedmaking without committing to purchasing all of the tools right away. You will still need to purchase reed blanks ($10) or cane pieces ($3). The only downside is that you will not be able to work on reeds at home; you will have to come to class to have access to the tools.Purchasing Reedmaking Tools and Supplies
There are two ways for oboists to begin making reeds. Students can learn to scrape reeds and learn tying later, or learn scraping and tying all at once.Learning scraping first
This option has a less-expensive initial investment in tools and allows the student to focus on learning one skill at a time. Students purchase reed blanks (usually about $10 each) and learn how to scrape these into finished reeds. When the student feels confident about the scraping process they can then learn to tie their own blanks, and purchase only the cane pieces (about $3 each).- First step: learning how to scrape reeds only. Supply list and where to obtain supplies: reedmaking_supplies_I.doc
- Second step: learning how to tie reeds (which you will then scrape). Supply list: reedmaking_supplies_II.doc
Learning scraping and tying at the same time
This option is for students who are ready to dive into reedmaking and who want to save money by making their own blanks from the beginning. Supply list and where to obtain supplies: reedmaking_supplies.docGroup Reedmaking On the Go
I am available to travel to your studio location (college, university, arts high school, private studio, etc.) to teach group reedmaking and give reedmaking master classes for beginning to advanced reedmakers. Please contact me to schedule.
