Gouged Cane
I gouged all of my cane on my 11.0mm RDG gouger. Gouged cane measures 0.57mm to 0.59mm in the middle. I weed out the undesirable pieces for you so you won't have to deal with hard, soft, grainy, or warped cane. What is the difference between the two diameter choices?
The 10.0 - 10.5mm cane will make reeds that have larger openings and the 10.5 - 11.0mm cane will make reeds that have smaller openings. Using my available shapes and RDG type II or MCW Sierra staples, I have liked the results I've been getting with the 10.0 - 10.5mm.Shaped cane
I start with carefully selected gouged cane as above, and hand shape it myself. What is the difference between the shape choices?
I have been using the Lucarelli shape and tying my reeds at 72.5mm on RDG type II or MCW Sierra staples. Refer to the Westwind shaper tip chart for measurements of the Lucarelli and Joshua +2 tips. There is also this chart that shows the Joshua +2 and the Sara tips:
